Imagine a world with no languages. How would people relate? They simply wouldn’t. It would be impossible for them to. Now look around. Can you see anything written? Are there colours around you? Do you hear any sound? You most certainly do. All those things – writing, colour, sound – and more – shapes, smell, touch – they’re all ways to communicate.
Culture is language dependant. You can define culture as some pattern of human knowledge which depends on social learning. Social learning is propelled by language. And so is culture. Therefore, you need a language to sustain a culture. Interestingly – and as consequence of the previous – a language can also be considered part of a culture.
Many languages exist on Earth. There are hundreds of them. What would happen if some did disappear? Some culture would be affected. Not much more than that. Diversity in languages may even be considered harmful. People could relate easily if they all used the same language. That’s why you learn a language other than your native, isn’t it?
Communication is everywhere. Even inside your cells!
Language is necessary. Communication is vital.
